Word Tree Consulting was founded in 2018 by Dr. Jacquilyn Weeks, who earned her PhD in English from the University of Notre Dame. She spent 10 years teaching award-winning classes at the university level and the last 8 years working with the national laboratories and many independent research groups to help scientists hone their writing and presentation skills.
Any scientist can tell you that if you want to make rational changes to a system, it helps enormously if you can start by understanding the system in question—when you are writing or presenting, the system that you want to influence is a human brain (or a group of human brains), so you need to start by understanding your audience. Jacqui brings together a striking mix of fundamental linguistics, behavioral psychology, user experience theory, basic biology, and PhD-level narrative analysis to help people understand how and why their narrative choices can be adapted to better engage a specific audience.
When she is not teaching, editing, or hiding out with a good book, Jacqui can often be found participating in search and rescue efforts with Sandia Search Dogs, fostering dogs with urgent medical needs for the Argos Shelter, and hiking on the many gorgeous trails around the Sandia mountains with her latest crew of fluffs.
Most of the talks are designed as 90 min presentations that can be effectively delivered as stand-alone events, delivered either onsite or virtually. To maximize the value of the training, it is often helpful to combine structured presentation with time for participants to process information and apply the principles to their own work.
To edit scientific documents effectively, it is important to understand both the expectations of the target audience and the stylistic patterns preferred by specific journals or granting bodies. The goal is not only to refine language, but to enhance clarity, structure, and overall narrative flow so that the work can be accurately understood and evaluated.
I often work with scientists on their personal portfolios or individual projects, either as a follow-up to a workshop or on an individual basis. This work focuses on refining materials and helping participants apply communication principles to their own work. It provides an opportunity to ensure that the material aligns with the audience.
